Emergency Medicine

The quickness and accuracy of diagnosis plays an important role in life saving process in emergency and critical care. The type of emergency care given depends upon the severity of the illness or injury of the patient.  Basically there are three types of the emergency care given to the patients, such as

1. First-aid: It is an initial medical intervention given to the patient with sudden illness or injury prior to the professional medical help.

2. Golden Hour: It is a care given by the medical professionals (Emergency Department Doctors) in the first hour of the injury or illness to prevent the death of the patients. There is observed to have greater scope of patient survival.

3. Triage: It is a process where an immediate attention or care is given to the patients with serious illness or injury in possible ways.

Almost, every hospital has its own Emergency Department (ED), where the Physicians are well trained to

  • Immediately recognizing the patient, evaluating, giving appropriate and disposition the patient with acute illness and injuries.
  • Administrating, researching and teaching about all the emergency medical care aspects.
  • Based on the requirement, evaluated patients are directed to the source of follow-up-care, which may be within or outside the hospital.
  • Provisions are given to the in-hospital patients, based on their emergency request.
  • Managing provisions for pre-hospital emergency care etc.
  • Emergency medicine has a tremendous impact on patients, due to its fast-pacing and team oriented specialization. Physicians in EM must have a good knowledge of most medical fields in order to attend patients from various medical emergencies, which could be gained by training.

Apart from training the physicians, it is also important to focus on some of the management aspects of emergency medicine, such as

  • Manage medical and administrative aspects.
  • Planning and management of natural and anthropogenic disasters.
  • Development of Poison and Toxicology center.
  • Preventive medicine.
  • Basic and clinical research (especially in resuscitation methods and acute interventions etc).
  •

“Always, life saving emergency medical care must be prefered prior to a delayed professional medical care”.
